Rama’s spark into the world of education effloresced when he taught English Language, English Literature and Physical Education to 15-16 year olds in an all-girls’ school (still among the top 20 Singapore secondary schools in 2018). His deeply embedded love for the English Language and Humanities blossomed culminating in teaching subjects at advanced levels when he embarked upon teaching General Paper, English Literature and History to 17-18-year-old junior college students in Singapore. Rama’s passion in helping students learn the finer aspects of English Literature developed in them the essential analytical approach to appreciate and savour the elixir of great classical literary works. Similarly, the demanding and higher-order General Paper with its meticulous essay and comprehension components required students to offer various viewpoints critically in their essay and to be concise and precise, besides evaluating statements, in their comprehension – Rama enjoys the challenge in getting the students to grasp the crucial skills in acing their examinations and at the same time sowing the seeds of an analytical mind needed when they anchor themselves in the working world. Besides, his love for nurturing very young minds in the range of 7- 14 year olds has always been a joy he beholds in seeing the glow in their faces.
Rama’s immense experience as a former practising criminal lawyer in Singapore puts him in the perfect mould in guiding students when it comes to acing the examinations where critical analysis is called for, be they be the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’, ‘A’ Level Examinations or the International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme. Students will find comfort and assurance when Rama guides to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills. His analytical, systematic and rigorous approach to education, broadly speaking, together with his excellent command of the English Language, undoubtedly is an asset he has honed over his almost 25 years of committed educational harvest.
Rama’s contribution to society is manifested as he volunteered to offer English Language tutoring to mainstream students from the low-income families enrolled in self-help groups such as the Chinese Development Association Council (achieving the Tutor Commendation Award) and the Singapore Indian Development Association. He also assisted the Singapore Police Force as a Special Police Officer where he received several awards for his arrests and commitment to public service.
